Hot hot hot and loads of sun and about 20 applications of sunscreen on Sat & Sun and thankfully no sunburn. Sat I started with a 15 min run and 15 min of stretching & rehab exercises. Then I spent the day at Corio for Little Aths Region Champs until 12pm and then dropped Connor back home (he ran a PB in his 200m but didn't progress to States) and then made my way to Doncaster for the Shield Final. Western Aths had 5 teams compete throughout the day, the underage teams from 9am to 2.30pm and the Open Divisions from 3pm to 7pm and the temperature got up to 34 in Corio and it felt hotter in the arvo at Doncaster.
The day was a good one as a coach and not as good as an athlete. Most of the kids I coach made finals and more than 75% automatically qualified for State Champs. As an athlete my Club had a vacancy in the 400m Div 3 team which I would have been eligible but couldn't help out, so I helped out throughout the day. In Div 2 we were missing many sprinters, sadly one sat at home because he didn't want to compete because he thought we had no chance so he wanted to concentrate on the individual side. Sounds harsh, but true! The Div 2 team finished 3rd and the Div 3 team 6th.

Sunday started with a 20 min run on the roads from home and then off to Corio for Day 2 of Region Champs, Connor's 400m was at 9am, again he ran a great PB, 3.4 seconds but not fast enough to progress, but we knew that before arrival, it was for fun and the experience. The rest of my day as a coach was great and a learning day, lots of kids raced really well, the highlight of the day was a 14 year girl who ran an 18 sec PB in her 1500m and qualified for States for the first time. But the learning part was spending time with her after fainting 15 min after her race and then looking after her and then ensuring she was cleared by First Aid and then she competed in the 300mH 3 hours later and also qualified for States. :)
Lots of PBs in some very hot conditions, peaking at 36 today.
